The best of Belize! The Paradise Islands of Belize, located in the less developed southern region of Belize's Barrier Reef, remain close to a pristine marine ecosystem. We'll kayak through the shallow reef-strewn waters, snorkel to our hearts' content, go to sleep lulled by the sound of ocean waves breaking on the shore, and fill each day with lots of exercise, delicious food, and the kind of relaxation that stems from immersion in a very different world and way of life. Then it's back to inland Belize, exploring wildlife sanctuaries, lagoons, and the ancient Mayan ruin of Lamanai. We'll experience true Belizean culture and see how these ancient economies have transitioned to the current day world. This is the perfect vacation for anyone with some kayaking and snorkeling experience and has an appreciation for other cultures.
Who can resist these gentle giants in their winter home of Florida's spring-fed rivers? During the winter months, manatees come to the springs of Crystal River NWR to conserve the energy necessary to survive the cold Gulf waters. Crystal River is the perfect setting to see a large number of protected Florida manatees in one place in their natural habitat. Hopefully, you will see them up close but practice your "manatee manners" - look, don't touch! This is an ideal trip both for women who know they love paddling and for those who want to give kayaking a try: you'll learn basic kayak strokes on calm waters and by the end of the weekend you will be a competent and confident paddler. Even if you discover you don't like kayaking, which we doubt, the thrill of these wondrous creatures sticking their snouts out of the water beside your kayak is simply an amazing experience!

The Road of Saint James (El Camino de Santiago) has many traditions. In addition to being a pilgrimage route for Christians wanting to visit the tomb of Saint James, many experts believe that pre-Christian people traveled it into the setting sun to the "end of the earth". There are also Celtic traditions, Goddess traditions, even traditions having to do with the lost city of Atlantis. This intertwining of traditions is one of the most interesting aspects of the Road: there is something there for almost everyone, but not always what people expect at the outset of their journey. Pilgrimage lore says that while a pilgrimage of any sort is by nature an intensely personal experience, the best way to complete this journey is in a small group of like-minded people.

We then move on to the Island of Sicily which shares all this and yet is different in every way with its own distinctive feel, receiving well-deserved recognition as a fascinating place to visit with fabulous cuisine. From the ruins of Pompeii, to climbing Vesuvius, eating pizza in Naples, learning Sicilian cooking, tasting local wine, and hiking to caves to see ancient art, our trip to southern Italy will delight all your senses.

In between we will hike some of the best parts of the Nakasendo Way, which linked the two cities during Japan’s feudal period and still passes through villages that have retained their traditional character.

We spend our days hiking this beautiful park and ‘come home’ to warm beds and hot food at the end of every day. The human history of the park is also very interesting, and we'll learn about the people who inhabited this area for years as we hike through Shenandoah.

Portugal is the oldest nation-state in Europe, ancient in history and rich in maritime culture. On this trip we combine hiking in the area just north of Lisbon - along white sand beaches and through thick forests - with hiking along the coast south of Lisbon, one the most scenic parts of the 'Rota Vicentina' considered a 'jewel' of Portugal. Wild beaches, towering cliffs, speculator wildflowers, and nesting storks provide a full day of incomparable natural history. Along the way we'll experience Portugal's warm culture, divine cuisine and perhaps the opportunity to indulge in some Portuguese wine.
