ACTIVITY LEVELS

All of our trips are active and require basic good health, balance, and mobility. These ratings are general guidelines. Each trip description has more specific information, and because of the flexibility of our itineraries, some trips have more than one rating.

Please do not sign up for any trip rated 3, 4 or 5 unless you already exercise regularly and/or you have the time to adequately prepare for it.

Ratings are based on the level of conditioning necessary to enjoy the trip and hours of activity, which may be broken up during the day. If a trip has 3 to 4 hours of activity, this does not mean that you are on your own for the rest of the day; typically our trips are quite full. The rest of the time might be spent sight-seeing, driving, visiting museums, optional activities, or free time on your own, including time to relax!

Level 1 trips are designed for anyone new to adventure travel, but travelers should have a basic level of training to ensure they are adequately prepared, even if they do not currently have a regular exercise routine. These trips are often designed to provide more ‘down time’, as well as some optional activities, and if you were to choose to do everything on the itinerary, they might be rated a level 2 or level 3.

Level 2 trips are designed for travelers with a moderate level of fitness who enjoy active adventures. These trips are suitable for anyone who has a regular exercise routine that includes walking, biking, swimming or other aerobic activities for 20-40 minutes 3 to 4 times a week.

Level 3 trips are moderately physical with an average of 4 to 6 hours of activity each day. To get the most enjoyment out of these trips, we recommend an exercise routine that includes some aerobic conditioning such as jogging, swimming, or cycling for 30-45 minutes at least 3 to 4 times a week. Cross-training and flexibility exercises are also recommended, depending on the specific trip.

Level 4 trips average 5 to 8 hours of physical activity most days, and depending on the shape you are in, they typically require training ahead of the trip. The better shape you are in, the more fun you will have; therefore, we recommend aerobic conditioning for at least 40-60 minutes 4 to 5 times a week, as well as some additional endurance and strength training.

Level 5 trips are the most physically demanding with roughly 5 to 10 hours of physical activity each day. These trips require a high degree of fitness and even if you exercise regularly, they typically will require more specific conditioning and a specialized training routine depending on the trip.
