This trip is for women who have some experience hiking and want to combine hiking with immersion in the history and culture of the area. We spend 3-6 hours hiking on most days. Coastal hiking is by no means flat, often with steep ascents and descents, sometimes on very rocky paths. Rating: 1 2 [3] 4 5 . We recommend you prepare with aerobic conditioning for a minimum of 30 - 45 minutes 4 days a week with some hikes of two to four hours.


On this boutique hiking trip, we explore sections of the South West Coast Path while learning about Cornish history and culture. Averaging 5 to 7 miles per day, we'll visit medieval castles, encounter azure blue lagoons, marvel at salty sea arches, and sample traditional Cornish pasties.


We'll be staying in charming locally owned boutique inns and lodges, in double occupancy rooms with en suite bathrooms. Please note: Not all lodgings will have elevators (lifts). It is essential that you are following the packing list closely, pack light and be able to handle your own luggage - including carrying up multiple stairs.

Itinerary

Below is the proposed itinerary for the trip. As is true on any adventure travel trip, plans for any specific day may be modified due to weather considerations, unforeseen circumstances, new opportunities, and group interests.

DAY 1
Arrive in Plymouth by train, a historic port city on the southern coast of Devon, renowned for its rich maritime heritage. Plymouth holds a significant place in history as the departure point of the Mayflower in 1620, carrying Pilgrims on their iconic journey to the New World. Our hotel is conveniently located near Plymouth Hoe and the Barbican. Plan to arrive by 3 p.m. and join us for a welcome chat at 3:30 p.m. before we set off on a stroll through the Barbican’s charming cobbled streets. Here, we'll visit the oldest operating distillery in Britain, the home of Plymouth Gin, where we'll learn about the distillation process, the botanicals used, and, of course, enjoy a tasting. On our way back to the hotel, we’ll take a scenic walk along Plymouth Hoe, soaking in views of Plymouth Sound as we pass Smeaton’s Tower. We’ll wrap up the evening with an early welcome dinner. For those who have just arrived, jet lag may be setting in, so we’ll ensure an early night to rest up for the adventures ahead.

DAY 2
Our Cornish coastal adventure starts with a visit to Tintagel Castle, a site that dates back to the Roman period however, the castle ruins that stand today are from the medieval period, built in the 13th century by Richard, Earl of Cornwall. The castle is associated with the legendary King Arthur, and it is believed by some to be the place where he was conceived. After lunch we’ll embark on our first hike of the trip which takes us from to Boscastle, a natural harbor which is sheltered by the surrounding cliffs. The harbor has been in use since medieval times and was historically important for the export of local produce such as slate, grain, and timber many of its buildings reflect traditional Cornish architecture.

DAY 3
After breakfast we transfer to the picturesque harbor, quaint streets, and vibrant atmosphere of Padstow, a well-loved spot on the Cornish coastline. We’ll take some time to have a wander around the harbor front before setting out to hike on the South West Coast Path. The hike takes us around Stepper Point, Gunver Head and Roundhole Point on our way to Trevone Bay. Along the way, you’ll experience rugged cliffs and scenic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Keep your eyes peeled and binoculars at the ready as there are often sightings of seabirds, seals and other marine life to be spotted from the clifftops. Afterwards we’ll transfer further down the west coast to the idyllic town of St Ives. This evening is free to relax and dine at the hotel, or set out on your own to explore this lovely town.

DAY 4
We’ll spend this morning exploring the picturesque town of St. Ives, a haven for artists, with its charming blend of cobbled streets, historic structures, and independent boutiques, we’ll explore the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. An English artist and sculptor, who found solace in St Ives during the Second World War, making it her lifelong home. After lunch, we’ll set out on a hike from St. Ives along a rugged stretch of coastline. As you traverse this untamed landscape, be greeted by panoramic vistas that extend over the expanse of the ocean. This evening, consider a post-dinner stroll, embracing the soft hues of dusk that grace this coastal haven.

DAY 5
This morning, we head out to visit St Michael’s Mount, a tidal island home to an ancient castle, chapel and local community. Immerse yourself in stories of deception and disguise while we explore. Return to the mainland where we’ll have lunch. Afterwards we’ll take a short drive to Mullion Cove, a picturesque harbor and cove situated on the Lizard Peninsula, we’ll hike along the South West Coast Path toward the white sands, turquoise water and serpentine rocks of Kynance Bay, one of the most photographed, filmed and painted beaches in Cornwall. The final stretch of our hike takes us to our hotel where we’ll settle in for the evening after dinner.

DAY 6
This morning after breakfast, we’ll set out on our final hike on the South West Coast Path. Today we’ll continue east towards Coverack, a village once famous for smuggling but now peaceful, quiet, and home to a handful of fishing boats. We’ll hike along the coast, passing the arched rock of the Devil’s Frying Pan and the sweeping sandy shores of Kennack Sands. Walk through the surf and with colorful wildflowers speckling the coastline, take in the beautiful views all around. Later in the afternoon, we’ll make our way back to the hotel, where we can gather in the famed pub for drinks and share stories from the day. Raise a glass for a toast—or as they say in Cornwall, “Yeghes da!”

DAY 7
After a leisurely breakfast on our final morning on the Lizard, we’ll transfer a short distance to the historic maritime town of Falmouth which played a significant role in the age of sail and was a key strategic port during various periods in history. We’ll visit Pendennis Castle, an artillery fort constructed by Henry VIII between 1540 and 1542. It formed part of the King’s Device programme to protect against invasion from France and the Holy Roman Empire, and defended the Carrick Roads waterway at the mouth of the River Fal. After a cultural Cornish morning, we’ll have lunch in town before transferring to Plymouth by mid-afternoon where we’’ll have some free time to take in the views of The Sound once more before raising a glass to celebrate a Cornish adventure over our final dinner together.

DAY 8
After a leisurely breakfast at our hotel, it’s unfortunately time to say our goodbyes. From here enjoy an extended stay in the city or take a local taxi to the Train Station where you can continue with your onward travel. “Duw genes!”

Breakfasts will be buffets at the hotels where we're staying. Dinner is in restaurants where you can order off the menu. Lunches may either be picnics or in restaurants.

If we know well in advance, we can accommodate vegetarian, lactose-free, and gluten-sensitive diets. We cannot guarantee a completely gluten-free diet and we cannot provide a kitchen guaranteed to be free of cross-contamination. If you are vegan, we ask that you bring some additional protein bars; and if you are gluten-sensitive, please bring some gluten-free snacks. If you have severe allergies, Celiac disease and/or other significant dietary restrictions, please call the office before you register.

You only need to pay a single supplement if you want to guarantee you have your own room. Otherwise we’ll pair you up with someone and then switch roommates every time we switch lodging.
