Opt Outside with Adventures in Good Company

You're invited to join Adventures in Good Company guides in Opting Outside this Black Friday. Several of our guides are leading free local hikes the day after Thanksgiving and we hope you'll join them in getting off the couch, out of the mall, and onto the trail in North Carolina, New York, Iowa, Colorado, and Louisiana. There is no fee to register, just show up at the trailhead at the appointed time and enjoy a guided hike in some of our country's most beautiful areas. Families are welcome!

Charlotte, North Carolina 

Piedmont Prairie Trail in Latta Plantation Nature Preserve

When: Friday November 23 at 2:00 pm 

Where: 6211 Sample Rd, Huntersville, NC. The trailhead is located by the canoe docking area on Canoe Access Road. 

What: A 4.8 mile hike alongside Mountain Island Lake with a shorter option. Parts of the trail are rocky so sturdy shoes and poles are helpful.  

What to bring: snacks, water, and cold weather gear. Who: AGC Guide Kim Moseley  

Colton, New York

Stone Valley Trail

When: Friday November 23 at 9:00am 

Where: 180 Lenny Road, Potsdam NY. Meet at the west side of the Raquette River parking area. *Trailheads are on both sides of the river just above the Colton dam; park at the west trailhead. 

What: Stone Valley Trail is a 7.2 mile out and back trail located near Potsdam, New York that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. It affords dramatic views and overlooks of many waterfalls and rapids with informational plaques on the Raquette River.

What to bring: appropriate cold weather gear, lunch, snacks and water. If excessive snow: snowshoes are appropriate.

Missouri Valley, Iowa

DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge 

DeSoto Wildlife Refuge

When: Friday November 23 at 10:00am 

Where: 1434 316th Lane, Missouri Valley IA. Meet at the Visitor's Center parking lot to drive to the trail head. 

What: A 2 mile hike/walk at the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge. The trail is gravel and wood chips, well groomed, and flat. This is a migratory bird route, has a steamboat excavation site, and a great family friendly museum. Restrooms are available at the visitor's center and at the trail head. 

What to bring: water, snacks, appropriate cold weather gear. $3 per car for entrance fees to the refuge.

Golden, Colorado

Black Bear/Horseshoe Trail Loop

When: Friday November 23, 10:00am

Where: Crawford Gulch Rd, Golden, CO. Meet at the trail head.

What: a 4.2 mile loop hike with 1,187 ft elevation gain in Golden Gate Canyon State Park.

What to Bring: appropriate cold weather gear, lunch, snacks and water. If excessive snow: snowshoes are appropriate.

Baton Rouge, Louisiana 

Black Swamp Trail at the LSU Botanical Garden

When: Saturday November 24 at 10:00am

Where: 4560 Essen Ln, Baton Rouge, LA. Meet at the Black Swamp trailhead. 

What: Black Swamp Trail is a 2.2 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Baton Rouge, Louisiana that features a lake and is good for all skill levels.

What to bring: water, snacks, appropriate cold weather gear.
