Ireland, appropriately known as the Emerald Isle, is a country steeped in history and rugged vistas. We'll encounter these vistas first hand as we hike to high cliffs, inland lakes, and coastal areas. We'll learn about Ireland's turbulent past, including the Great Famine and the conflicts between the Catholics and the Protestants. Not to be missed by fans of poetry, we will visit the resting place of W. B. Yeats, one of the foremost figures in 20th-century literature. We'll also experience present day life with explorations of the region's most enticing cities. And of course no trip to Ireland would be complete without visiting several castles and the famous Kylemore Abbey.
Trip Info
This trip is designed for active women in good physical condition who want to combine walking, hiking and sightseeing with immersion in the rich history and culture of Ireland. This trip is rated a 2, although choosing longer options on several days would make it an easy 3. Preparation for this trip will require about 40 minutes of brisk walking 4 times a week (on hills if possible), or some type of aerobic conditioning 3 times a week.
Rating: 1[2]3 4 5.
We will combine hiking throughout the trip with visiting some of the many historic and cultural sights, ranging from ancient ringforts to to rebuilt castles. Our Irish guide is a wealth of information about all things Ireland and we will leave with a deeper knowledge of this country and its people.
In Dublin we will spend the first and last nights at Buswells Hotel. Once we leave Dublin, we will be staying at high quality lodges or guesthouses, with ensuite bathrooms. In Clifden we will be spending three nights at All the Twos B&B, a Bed & Breakfast built to hotel standards, or similar. We then spend three nights in Donegal's Central Hotel, renowned for its unique setting in the Centre of the Historic Town of Donegal, or similar. Our last two nights will be spent in Ballintoy, at the Fullerton Arms guesthouse or similar.

Below is the proposed itinerary for the trip. As is true on any adventure travel trip, plans for any specific day may be modified due to weather considerations, unforeseen circumstances, new opportunities, and group interests.
The things that come to mind when I think of Ireland are the Quiet Man movie and it was the greenest green I'd ever seen when flying home from Desert Storm and we landed in Shannon. I got to visit the bridge and have a pint in the pub where the movie was filmed (both off itinerary). I got to see that green up close and personal. Lastly, I had been fighting AFIB for nearly 4 years, which had severely limited my physical activity and changed my life dramatically. I wanted to see if I could do it, and specifically chose a less strenuous trip with lower level options for the challenge. I had a 3rd cardiac ablation mid-March, without which I would not have been able to make it. The support of my trip-mates got me to the summit of Diamond Hill the first day of hiking. I got to golf in Ireland which I did instead of the last day's hike.
covering a great deal of ireland. variety of activities. our irish guide
Loved the hiking. It really challenged me.
I really enjoyed the black cab tour and the tour through the bogland. I learned so much. The hikes were all in beautiful areas. I could skip Yeats grave but I would have liked maybe a free hour or so in Derry to go through the museum and walk around just a bit.
Highlights were hiking in beautiful surroundings coupled with a chance to learn Irish history and see some of the famous sites. I did discuss expectations of hiking with the trip leader, to make sure it was correctly rated as a 2, with no boulder scrambles. This turned out to be incorect, with one hike in particular that had no trail and required rock scrambling, which was harder than anticipated. I discuss this further below
Everything about this trip was incredible. The guides were great. The sights were beautiful. The women with whom I traveled had a marvelous sense of adventure and humor.
I thought that our local tour guide was unprofessional and did not compare at all to local guides on all of the trips I have previously been on. She was rude, rough around the edges and very disorganized. The tour company sent us out on a bus that was in disrepair and there was quite a bit of confusion due to it. Some of the side trips were not very interesting, especially the rope bridge- it was such a tourist trap. We spent way to much time on the bus and not enough time hiking.
Would have preferred more hiking.
This was my third AGC trip and I felt the description of this trip could be improved. I understand it's a "low 3" but the narrative is that "...combine hiking throughout the trip with..." Thus, I was anticipating frequent hikes. I think the trip is more accurately described as a "2" with options to make it a "3" as the majority of the trip seemed to be devoted to active sightseeing. Please understand that I thoroughly enjoyed myself once I changed my expectations but I would not have worn my hiking boots on the plane had I understood walking and sightseeing would be the norm.
All of the hikes were great and the mix of historic sites was a great insight into the lovely country of Ireland. Sad we missed the walk to Clifden Castle on the 20th as I think we all would have liked some exercise on this travel day. The 3 hour is Galway and the on your own time in Belfast were too long and with little information on how to spend your time other than shopping. It would be very helpful to have some options as not everyone is a shopper and many of us arrived in Dublin prior to the trip and would have shopped then.
Highlights included the hike from the Giants Causeway to Ballantoy Harbor - awesome! Diamond Mountain hike-beautiful, and the sheepdog exhibition. One small issue was that Sandra (the local guide) did not seem to like hiking (although to be fair, she was ill), it seemed like hiking was secondary. Dropping us off at Galway to shop/lunch for 3 hours on our own was not the best way to start the trip!
I was disappointed in the amount of inactive time. Too much time in the van driving, too much castle seeing/photo ops and not any real level 3 hikes.
Walks along the ocean and sheep farm.
Nice mix of activity and cultural experiences, different from my other AGC trips.
I loved the area and the people in the group, the walk along the Coast to Giant's Causeway, the famine walk and the tour of Derry with Bogtown Tours (Paul Doherty). Least enjoyable was the amount of time spent on the bus, it seemed as though we were going back and forth too much as if the change in locations for our original lodging was not accounted for in the itinerary.
New friends, new place. Awesome sights while hiking. Lots of history.
The time in Connemara and the things we did there were the best. The time in Derry and Belfast felt really rushed. Yes, we did get a feel for the area and that is better than nothing. Of course, I like the countryside better than cities.
Highlights were the days spent hiking - Diamond Hill, Slieve League, Coastal Trail
It seemed there could have been less bus riding to do some of the things. Could have stayed in a better location to prevent the back tracking.
Highlights - guides (Sandra and Brenda were excellent), walks, coast of N. Ireland (last couple days, Giant's Causeway and surrounding area), Derry, Connemara hill hike, sheep dog trial, Famine walk. Letdowns were hotels (several very uncomfortable rooms) and amount of time spent in bus and at meals compared to actually doing things outside. The itinerary turned out to be exploratory, which I wished I'd known up front. I would suggest covering less ground so you can spend more time experiencing the country and less time in the bus. I would cut, just to start: Titanic Museum on a banking holiday (very crowded and because of this option the historic tour of Belfast, which I thought was supposed to be a trip highlight, was cut very short) Yeat's grave Galway (too much time spent there - standard coastal tourist town, skip or eat lunch quickly and leave)
For me, highlight of trip was seeing Book of Kells before AGC trip started. Also tour of Derry with immediacy of past Troubles brought home. Also, Famine Road walk. Sandra's history talks on bus were very good.
