Old Lodge to Lodge On the Superior Hiking Trail
North Shore of Lake Superior, Minnesota
September 26, 2023 - September 30, 2023
"I am back in Montanaland, refreshed after a wonderful week on Lake Superior. It was exactly what my stressed body, mind and spirit needed." M Mandali, Helena, MT
Highlights:
- Hiking through the Minnesota woods in fall
- Gazing down from seven overlooks on Oberg Mountain
- Sampling different North Shore restaurants, particularly the Angry Trout
- Having a choice of two hikes of different lengths each day
- Visiting the totally charming town of Grand Marais
Backpacker Magazine calls the Superior Hiking Trail one of the ten best
trails in America - and we agree! This trail combines a true sense of
remoteness with an incredible diversity of terrain and dramatic
scenery. Offering outstanding views of Lake Superior and diverse
ecosystems, it winds along the ridgetops of the Sawtooth Mountain Range
for 200 miles from Two Harbors to the Canadian Border. The fall foliage
is truly spectacular with the oranges and reds of the sugar maples, and
the bright yellow of birch and aspen. Each day you'll have a choice of
a more moderate (3 to 5 miles) or a longer (6 to 10 miles) hike, and
every evening we'll relax in a different one of the North Shore's many
fine lodges and resorts. $1280

Itinerary:
September 26: Our hiking trip starts at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday when we pick you up at a designated meeting place in Duluth. We drive up the North Shore and have a picnic lunch before warming up with a hike in one of the many state parks that preserve some of the most spectacular parts of the Lake Superior shoreline. We spend tonight at Bluefin Bay, a collection of beautiful designed condos whose windows look out directly onto the lake.
September 27 - 29: For the next three days we will have an option of a full day of hiking, or combining a shorter hike with time to relax, read, write in your journal, or sit and stare at the Lake. For example, on one day everyone hikes up Oberg Mt (despite it's name, the elevation gain is about 500 feet) and takes the circuit hike around the top to all seven overlooks. For those who want a shorter day, they may choose to hike over to Mt Leveaux or to visit the town of Grand Marais. Those wanting a longer hike continue along the trail over Moose Mountain for about 6 miles and directly into Caribou Highlands, where we spend two nights. Located up the hill from the lake, the property is surrounded by hillsides ablaze in fall color. Hot tubs help soothe any aches you may have from the day's hiking. On the last night we eat at the Angry Trout in Grand Marais, undoubtedly the best restaurant in the area and always a huge hit.
September 30: On this last day we will choose a shorter morning hike, possibly in Cascade State Park or to the Devil's Kettle. The further up the lakeshore we go, the brighter the fall colors are so in a typical year, this hike will be absolutley gorgeous. We then sadly pack up and head back to Duluty, stopping for a picnic lunch along the away. We will be back in Duluth and to the airport by 3 p.m. Thursday.
