    Our Shorter Spring Trips

Longing for a real spring break but can't take too much time away? We have the solution for you!! In May we offer two very different long weekend getaways.

    Kayaking Maryland's Eastern Shore:

    * 3 kayaking trips (2 to 6 hours) exploring different aspects of the Maryland Coastal Bays ecosystem
    * single accommodations at two of the area's finest hotels
    * a private winery tour followed by a four-course dinner with wine pairings
    * an afternoon of exploration on Assateague Island, famous for its wild ponies

    Waterfalls and Wineries:

    * a private wine-tasting and visits to two wineries
    * gorgeous hikes in the north Georgia mountains
    * a dinner and brunch at two of the best restaurants in the area
    * accommodation at the Hiker Hostel, one of the nicest hostels in the US.

Discounted spaces are still available on both.

    Resources for local day hikes

Occasionally women email us expressing interest in day or weekend trips, which we no longer offer. However, there are some wonderful local women's outing clubs. The ones I know about are all East Coast focused. I will be posting this on our blog so if you have any add, please let me know and I'll add it there.

Washington Women Outdoors: Hiking, biking, kayak and other day trips in the Maryland, Virginia and DC area

Women Outdoors Regional groups all over the East Coast. A highpoint is always the annual Gathering.

Trail Dames. Hiking and backpacking "for curvy women". Chapters all over the East Coast and an annual Summit (I spoke there last year- great fun!!).

Women Outdoors Network Atlanta-based club that offers social and indoor as well as outdoor activities

Adventures for Women Primarily based in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, primarily hiking, and very active!

Women Climbers Northwest. This was one of the first organizations for women climbers and was quite active in the 90s. It's hard to tell how active they still are.

Becoming an Outdoors Woman. Not an outing club, these are weekend workshops usually sponsored by a state's Department of Natural Resources. Originally focusing on hunting and fishing, some have branched out to include other outdoor activities as well.

Another resource is to check MeetUp and see what's happening in your local area.

4 tips for saving money on stuff

f you're new to adventure travel or an outdoor activity, sometimes you might wonder if you have to make a choice between getting what you need and putting your child through college or retiring before the age of 80. Unless you decide to become a dog musher with a kennel of 40 dogs or to climb Mt Everest on a guided climb, usually the answer is no. Here are some suggestions to help keep you solvent.

    1. Focus on value rather than price. If you focus only on price, you might end up getting stuff that won't last long and not work well.

    2. Don't always buy at outdoor stores. But having said that, if you have access to a locally owned outdoor store, you might choose to support it even if you're paying more.

    3. Don't wait until you need something to buy it. At the same time, don't buy something you don't really need.

    4. Shop discount sites on the Internet. Again, it helps to know what you're looking for, and how to tell the difference between something that's a good value and something that is just cheap.

And the next time you wince at the price of something, keep it in perspective. In the long run, spending time in the outdoors and/or engaging in active travel will keep you and your pocketbook much healthier than many of the other addictions people have.
