    Holiday Gift ideas

This year we again asked our guides to share their ideas for clothing or gear that would make good gifts, and we published the holiday gift list here. We also asked for suggestions for books they've enjoyed and for non-profits they support. As you know, many nonprofits have been really struggling since the recession started. Supporting the ones that we think make a difference has never been more important (and can make a great gift). Click here for our book and nonprofit suggestions. Happy shopping!

    4 tips for staying warm

Even here in Baltimore, winter is slowly approaching. But that doesn't mean you need to be a couch potato eating too many potato chips. Here are four tips to keep you warm (oriented towards hikers but applicable anytime you're active outside):
    1. Dress in layers. Several thinner layers are better than one heavy layer because you can adjust your clothing to your level of activity. Try to avoid sweating.
    2. Always carry a thin windproof shell and, if you've been sweating and stop for a break, put it on immediately. Don't wait until you've cooled down or you're likely to chill. Light rain jackets work well.
    3. Keep your skin moisturized. Dry, chapped skin lets out moisture and starts feeling cold sooner.
    4. Keep a hat and gloves or mittens on your pack, always, and put them on before you desperately need them.

    Our annual survey

I know you're really busy this time of year! But it's also our planning time, and as always, we would like your input. I've put together a short survey - it shouldn't take more than 5-7 minutes. And at the end, you have a chance to be entered into a drawing for a $250 donation to your favorite nonprofit. Click here to take the survey. Surveys need to be completed by December 11; we'll contact you if you win. Thanks!!

    Scotland - December webinar

Scotland is a gorgeous country, with rugged mountains, dramatic shoreline, and beautiful lochs. This year we're offering two different trips there. During our webinar we'll show lots of beautiful pictures, talk about the itineraries and lodging, discuss how to get there and what to bring, and answer any of your questions. You are welcome to join us even if you have no intention of going there with us.

We will be offering the webinar on December 15 at 8:30 EST. To attend, all you need is a computer with a high speed internet connection. Click here to register. We're hoping to record this webinar so if you're interested but can't attend, please let me know and we'll send you the link after the webinar.

    Our new bandanna

Finally we have an awesome new option to celebrate your traveling with us: a bandanna! Specifically, this bandanna! We always have them on our packing lists but really, you can 't buy one as classy as this. Deb worked hard with a graphic designer to get just the right look, and initial reactions have been enthusiastic. We hope you like it as much as we do.

    Best wishes for the season

Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, Solstice, Kwanzaa or getting a couple of extra days off from work, we hope you have a good holiday season. Some of us will go to more parties, and others of us find it a great time to get lots of work done because everyone else is going to parties. This can also be good time to look back at the past year, remember the things we did and feel proud of, and the mistakes we hope we learned from. However you choose to celebrate, or not, we hope you have a great month.--Marian, for all the guides at Adventures in Good Company
