| Who travels on Adventures in Good Company trips? |
Adventures in Good Company welcomes all women. The majority of women are between 35 and 65, and we've had women as young as 20 and as old as 87. Women come from all over the US as well as Canada, England, and Germany. Some women are single, and some married or partnered. About 75% join our trips on their own, while others travel with someone. Stay-at-home moms, professionals, students, businesswomen, non-profit employees and retired women all regularly join us. We welcome lesbians and most of our participants are heterosexual. We think that the diversity of women who come on our trips is one of the greatest pleasures of our groups and group travel. |
| Why would I choose to go with a company rather than on my own? |
Women choose to travel with us for many reasons. Some come to learn new skills, so that they can pursue the activity on their own, or just to try something new. Some have trouble finding other women who share their love for adventure. Others simply lack the time to do all the organizing that any trip takes, and enjoy not having to hassle with the details. And some women love the idea of going on a trip where they aren't in charge, and can sit back and relax while someone else takes care of the planning and cooking the meals. |
| What kind of shape do I need to be in for your trips? |
All of our trips are active and the majorirty require that you engage in some type of regular exercise before the trip, if you don't now. How much exercise? It really depends on the trip. The majority of our trips are suitable for women who exercise 3 to 5 times a week. Our backpacking trips and some of our hiking trips often require some additional conditioning, and our trips rated as 1 or 2 are suitable for anyone who is healthy, generally active, and has no significant mobility limitations. Every trip has a rating that suggests the kind of condition you should be in. |
| I don't like camping! Do you have any trips for me? |
We certainly do. Of our 40 trips in 2010, 27 have no camping out. Each trip description has an explanation of the accommodations for that trip. |
| I want to really push myself. What do you suggest? |
On most of our trips there is a fairly high degree of flexibility, allowing you to choose for yourself exactly how much you want to do. The backpacking trips have inherently higher physical demands. Our best advice is to call us at 1-877-439-4042 and tell us what you do for exercise and what you're looking for. |
| What if I'm the oldest/youngest/heaviest/least in shape/only single woman/only mom on the trip? |
You might be. Someone has to be the oldest/youngest/heaviest/least in shape person on the trip. And while the great majority of our trips have both single and non-single women, and moms and non-moms, sometimes they don't. But it doesn't matter if you're "different" in any of those ways - what you will share with everyone else is a desire to experience adventure in your life, and an appreciation of the joy and camaraderie of being in an all women's group. |
| What kind of food can I expect? |
In one word: great! In many words: Our camping food is based on a vegetarian diet, and we make sure there is meat available at some meals for those who prefer it. Our food is always hearty and delicious- in fact, women often tell us that they eat better on our trips than they do at home (visit the Recipes section of our Resources section for some of our recipes). With advance notice, we can accommodate most dietary restrictions or allergies. When we eat at restaurants we look for the best local fare and you always order off the menu. |
| Do I pay a single supplement if I come by myself? |
The majority of women come on our trips without knowing anyone else on it. You only pay a single supplement if you want to be assured of having a room to yourself. Otherwise we'll arrange roommates and usually switch several times during the trip. If you sign up with a friend and want to be sure you share a room for the entire trip, just let us know and we'll be glad to arrange it. |
| Do you offer any financial assistance for women who can't afford a trip? |
We have a limited program of financial assistance for single moms who otherwise would not be able to afford our trips. For details, click here. |
| Can you give me a reference to someone who has been on the trip before? |
Absolutely. We would be happy to give you names and telephone number or emails of people who have agreed to be contacted. |
| Can I purchase an Adventures in Good Company gift certificate? |
Yes, and we think the gift of adventure is one of the best you can give! Maybe you have a mom who wants to get outside a little more, or a daughter who deserves a graduation present. Maybe your wife could use some time just for herself, where someone else plans the meals. We can provide gift certificates in any amount, for specific trips or for use on any trip she is interested in. Just give us a call or contact us. |
| Who are the guides? |
All of our guides are experienced outdoors women who love being outdoors, enjoy teaching, and have been through either Woodswomen's or Adventures in Good Company's guide training program. Our guides' primary focus is to make sure that your trip is fun and always keeps safety in mind and fun, and that you learn whatever skills you choose. Each guide holds current CPR and Wilderness First Responder certification. To learn more about our guides, click here. We believe that our guides are some of the best in the business- and our participants think so too! For some trips we work in conjunction with experienced professional outfitters as well. In this case there is always at least one Adventures in Good Company guide working with a guide(s) from the outfitter. |
| How can I apply for a position with Adventures in Good Company? |
Guides are hired as independent contractors and opportunities are limited. For the most part we only consider women who already have substantial outdoor and/or guiding experience, although we do have a limited apprenticeship program for women who are interested in gaining guiding experience. If you're interested in either, the first step is to sign up for an Adventures in Good Company trip as a participant. At the same time, please send us a resume that emphasizes your outdoor experience. Also, please download our skills checklist and trip list (both of these are PDF documents) and send them in with your resume to 5913 Brackenridge Ave, Baltimore, MD 21212. After these two steps have been completed, the next step is to set up a time for an interview by phone. |
